I'm really not enamored of any of Peters' non-Cadfael books. They're written well enough, but I find myself more often than not bored by them. I had hoped for better in this mystery set in India, but didn't find it. As a favor to his girlfriend Tossa's mother, Dominic Felse agrees to chaperone a young teenage girl and deliver her to her father in India. Once there, however, they discover that he is missing and are at a loss as to what to do with her. Then she is kidnapped and they must find a way to get her back. The story was interesting but fell a little flat, even to the end, and I could not relate to any of the characters. I'll stick to Cadfael.
Ms. Peters does a wonderful job of describing modern-day India in this book. It's easy to tell that she often visited there and loved it. India is teaming with life and with colours. In this book we have Dominic and his girlfriend Tossa acting as chaperones to deliver a young girl to her Indian father. Once there they find themselves in a whole bunch of trouble. Their job of delivering their young charge becomes very complicated when she goes missing. Tossa and Dominic are then racing against time in a strange country in order to try to get her back. Ms. Peters' characters in this book are wonderfully drawn, and the story is a wonderful journey to a wonderful country.
University students Dominic Felse and Tossa Barber are becoming a stable couple, so Tossa doesn't even think about leaving him behind when she accepts a mission from her actress mother's costar. Tossa has learned over the years to be careful with her mother's flights of fancy, but why should she turn down a chance to travel to India at someone else's expense? The task she's accepted, in partnership with Dominic, is delivering 14-year-old Anjli Kumar into the care of the father she hasn't seen since she was 5 years old. Dorette Lester, Anjli's mother, is preparing to remarry; and she wants to settle her first marriage's offspring elsewhere.

Anjli proves to be spoiled and determined, but self-sufficient in the way of any youngster forced to grow up without much parental interest. Of course Dorette has not considered what may happen if the girl's father is not available when she arrives - but as it turns out, he isn't. And his mother, the grandmother who is Anjli's only other close relative, lies on her deathbed. So Dominic and Tossa cannot relinquish their charge into her paternal family's care, at least not right away. Before they have a chance to sort things out and decide what to do instead, Anjli disappears; and a ransom demand follows.

Dominic Felse, son of a CID inspector, finds it difficult indeed to restrain himself from asking the police to help as the kidnapping plays out. Watching this familiar character operate in a new and quite different setting, that of India at the mid-20th Century instead of the United Kingdom or (in the book that brought him together with Tossa) Europe, entertained me considerably. Dom proved adaptable, and the mystery's final twist actually did manage to surprise me this time. Like the rest of the Felse series, loads of fun to read.

Not as interesting as her Cadfael books.
Ellis Peters was a wonderful writer and I love her books. The books in the Felse series are my favorites, although the Brother Cadfael books are also very very good.
Unlike the Cadfael series which broadened my knowledge of the history of medieval England, in the Fellse Mysteries, Mrs Pargeter opens up countries for which I have little knowledge, giving a wonderful scenario of the country. Both series are so much more than the mysteries.
